These whiskies are matured in first fill ex-bourbon barrels and are vatted together for six months before bottling. Years ago, some malt men would develop a strain injury which had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey's, so they nicknamed it 'monkey shoulder'. Bottled at 86 proof (43 ABV), Monkey Shoulder is a 100 malt whisky made from a blend of specially selected Scotch malt whiskies from William Grant & Son’s own line of whiskies including Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie. Well, in the traditional malt whisky making process, malted barley is turned by hand by malt men using large heavy malt shovels. The three main single malt whiskies in Monkey Shoulder are Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie - all from Speyside, the spiritual home of whisky. Okay, so where did ‘Monkey Shoulder’ come from? This heady whisky cocktail is like a warm embrace on a chilly day. ‘Batch 27’ didn’t have the snappiest ring to it and instead we named our whisky Monkey Shoulder in tribute to our whisky heritage and in 2003 we set out to give the whisky world a good old fashioned shake up. We’re a big fan of Monkey Shoulder whisky, a triple malt Scotch. The three Speysides are blended together and mature in first fill ex-bourbon casks imparting a smooth and mellow vanilla flavor in the resting malt. But our perfect blend didn’t and so we ended up creating a new category of Scotch ‘a blend of malts’ that no one else had ever released before.
